About Me

Erica Cohen Lyons

Since 2002, I have been lucky enough to be able to call Hong Kong home though I continue to divide my summers, and my heart, between the US and Israel.

I am the founder/editor-in-chief of Asian Jewish Life – a journal of spirit, society and     culture. This international, quarterly print magazine celebrates the diversity of the Jewish experience in Asia and also perfectly blends my passion for literature, art, history, culture, Judaic studies, and travel. I am a regular columnist for The Jewish Press in New York as well as a freelance writer for a number of international publications that include: The    Jewish Chronicle (UK), The Times of Israel and Playtimes (Hong Kong).  I was the winner of the 2011 Be’chol Lashon (In Every Tongue) New Media Award for my use of media to represent diversity.

In addition to writing about Asia, I often speak about it too and have been a participant in forums that included: TEDx Victoria Harbour (Hong Kong) where I spoke about tourism as a means of preservation of Jewish historical sites in the region; the SEFER International Conference for Judaic Studies (Moscow), where I spoke about the contemporary Jewish communities in the Far East; Limmud China (Shanghai) where I presented the history of Jewish Hong Kong and the JDC’s Day of Global Responsibility (Shanghai) where I told the Laura Margolis     story. I have appeared on RTHK Radio 3 Hong Kong several times on shows that include: Asian Threads,    Money for Nothing and 123 Show.

My poetry is featured in Not a Muse: The Inner Lives of Women, a World Poetry Anthology. My photography can be found publications that include: the Hong Kong Economic Journal, Haaretz and The Jewish Press.

I am a correspondent member of Hong Kong’s Foreign Correspondents’ Club, on the board of Hong Kong’s    Jewish Historical Society and a member of the Hong Kong’s Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI).

Most recently I participated in the Tikvah Advanced Summer Institute where I joined professionals from around the globe to study big ideas, great texts, and current issues.

I am an avid reader and enthusiastic photographer as well as an overly enthusiastic cat owner. I am also the mother to four children, who often unwittingly find their way into my articles.
